“I truly benefited from the closet edit I gave my wife with the Charleston Style Concierge.  Our closet has never been so organized and enjoyable.  The style advice you gave my wife has increased her confidence and saved me money!  Thank you for all of your help.”
– Andy Johnston – Folly Beach, SC

“Ever since my wife’s closet edit she has been much happier about her clothing.  Buying clothes was always a source of frustration for her.  Since her edit she has come back from her shopping trips smiling and showing off her clothes; a major improvement.  I have noticed a dramatic difference in my wife’s appearance since her closet makeover.  I feel like she has always dressed as if she is much older than she really is.  Her new clothes are more colorful and fun, making her appear younger and more vibrant.  Not only do I think my wife’s outfits are significantly improved, she does as well.  Her attitude towards her new look has been really refreshing. It is great to see her so happy about her clothing.  “

When it comes to pregnancy and fashion, women tend to fall into one of two camps.  There are those of us who embrace our new figure with gusto and rush out to buy a wardrobe designed to flaunt our fabulous new accessory—our growing belly–before we even have the equivalent of a beer gut.  Then there are those of us who awkwardly try to dress this-thing-that-was-formerly-our-body with our existing wardrobe until we’ve exhausted all the wrap and empire waist dresses we own. While the former would happily skip from one pricey maternity boutique to the next, the latter can’t fathom spending money on clothes that are only going to be worn for a few months.  Regardless of which camp you claim allegiance to, the following hints will make sure you don’t lose your sense of style just because you’ve lost sight of your feet.
Designer Denim: The good news for anyone without a budget is that you can find all of the designer brands with maternity waistbands.  Sevens, Citizens, Joes Jeans, True Religion, Paige—the list goes on and on!  A more wallet-friendly option is to send your favorite pair (well, maybe second favorite pair) to a company like Belly Jeans where they will convert them to maternity jeans for a fraction of the cost of a new pair.
Locals Only: Charleston is fortunate to have several stylish maternity boutiques just waiting to outfit the blossoming bellies of the Lowcountry.  Sprout is a chic boutique for anyone West of the Ashley, while Mt. Pleasant boasts A Pea in the Pod and From Here to Maternity.  For trendy yet budget-friendly pregnancy clothes, you can’t beat Target.  Marshall’s and T.J. Maxx are worth a look for non-maternity clothes that could fit the bill.
Online Finds: The beauty of online shopping when you’re pregnant?  You don’t have to venture out into public when all you feel like doing is nibbling crackers and lying on the couch.  If you want to dress like a celebrity, Isabella Oliver and Seraphine make the A-list of fashionable online boutiques.  Luckily for pregnant women everywhere, many of our favorite chains have jumped on the maternity bandwagon and now offer great looking clothes at reasonable prices.  Some to check out are LOFT, GAP, and Old Navy.
Staples: Just like your pre-pregnancy wardrobe consisted of a few key pieces, your maternity selection will be much more versatile if you keep the same thing in mind.  Buy a good maternity tank top in black and one in white to layer under non-maternity shirts (they will ride up) or pair them with a long cardigan from your existing wardrobe.  In addition to a great pair of jeans, make sure you own at least one dress, one skirt and one pair of dress pants that you love.  Remember you are going to wear things over and over again, so be sure to pick items that you can dress up or down and that aren’t a pattern or color that will make it obvious that you are wearing it for the third time—that week.
Accessorize: While your stomach may triple in size and your feet swell to unrecognizable proportions, your ears, wrist and neck should stay roughly the same.   Adorn yourself with all manner of bling while you can!  Once that little angel of yours in on the outside, your baubles only serve to spark up a game of tug-of-war.  Buying something without a size will do wonders for your self-esteem late in pregnancy too!

Have you ever glanced in the mirror and thought, “I look Okay, so this must be good enough.”?
Have you ever bought something without trying it on because you think, “Oh, it will be Okay.”?
What if I asked you how you feel about your style? Would you say, “It’s Okay.”?

Yes? Then you have accepted an “Okay” standard.

Now think about the rest of your life. Would you return to a restaurant that you thought the food was just okay? Would you send your children to an okay school if you could send them to the best?  Would you feel that an okay job performance at work was the way to go? Heck No!
Yet it is very easy to settle for an okay standard when it comes to ourselves. It’s time to drop your okay standard!

Remember to put yourself first. When you are unhappy or feel just okay it negatively affects your family, colleagues, friends, and even the dog.
Be disciplined about what you want. If you want a certain style stop buying multiples of items that only make you feel okay.
Remind yourself that anything is possible. If your best friend came to you with a problem would you say to her, “I’m sure there are no possible solutions that could help you.”? NO, you wouldn’t! You would help her brainstorm—do the same for yourself.
Take action! If you can’t find anything in your closet find the time to clean it up. If you feel like you wear the same thing over and over again grab a magazine and look for outfit inspiration. If you need help figuring out what to do—ask a friend or hire a professional.
Stop only seeing what you are not and embrace who you are. It’s easy to find faults with yourself and completely ignore everything. Change up the way you think and embrace what you love about yourself. If you like your eye color look for tops, scarves, or dresses that make your eyes pop. If you like your butt, don’t hide it in oversized pants. Embrace who you are by accentuating the things you like.

How many different outfits do you try on before settling on something and heading out the door?  Two?  Five?  Who has time for that!  If you find yourself taking longer than 10 minutes to get dressed in the morning, your closet could be in need of a re-org.  An organized closet can help you find the clothes, shoes and accessories you are looking for, put together outfits more quickly and creatively, and eliminate unnecessary stress in the mornings.
Closet Imperative #1:  You can’t wear it if you can’t see it.  The first thing to consider when evaluating your closet is whether or not you have enough shelves, hanging space and drawers for your wardrobe.  Closet organizational systems can be purchased at your nearest Target and are relatively affordable and easy to install.  Another option is to bring in a professional.  They can help you determine the best storage solutions and configuration for your space.  Don’t have the budget for either of these options?  You’ll be amazed at how something as simple as a shoe rack, cubby system or a couple of storage bins can improve your space.  Check out one of our favorite blogs Good Life for Less for other great ideas on how to organize your purses and jewelry with bulletin boards and shower curtain hooks.

Closet Imperative #2:  Less is more (but only if the less if full of wardrobe staples that you love). Once you have the appropriate storage solution in place, it’s time to take a look at your wardrobe.  Many women panic when they hear the term “closet edit.”  They immediately picture barren shelves and empty hangers, their favorite possessions boxed up for donation.  This depressing vision couldn’t be further from reality!  A closet edit will not only help you realize the full potential of your wardrobe but also make getting dressed in the morning significantly quicker and more fun.  As counterintuitive as it may seem, having fewer clothing choices can actually help you expand your wardrobe.  You will wear more of what you own because you won’t be overwhelmed by the options (which is why so many of us wear the same few outfits over and over again).

Closet Imperative #3:  Just Do It.  Set aside some time to go through your entire closet (this won’t take as long as you think).  Pull out anything you haven’t worn in a year or that doesn’t fit right now. Make sure that your “keep” pile fits your current lifestyle and the image you are trying to project.  Store any out-of-season clothing in boxes under the bed to make room for your working wardrobe.   Now organize your clothes by type and color.  Too many black shirts?  Keep the ones that you wear the most and donate the rest.  If you just can’t bear to part with something, box it up and see if you miss it.  If after a few months you haven’t thought about wearing it, go ahead and give it away.  Now here’s the fun part.  Grab your favorite fashion magazines and think about how you can create new outfits from your slimmed down wardrobe.  Don’t forget to consider accessories like jewelry, shoes and purses.  Create outfits for different occasions–work, happy hour, girl’s night, sightseeing, running errands, etc. Take pictures of your favorites and keep them handy for a day when you are lacking inspiration.

Just because something is on sale doesn’t mean it belongs in your closet! Having a few tricks up your sleeve can prevent you from throwing away money.

Feeling Needy

Stick to your “need” list. If you are in the market for something specific, sales can be a great time to shop. Not sure what you need? Keep a notebook in your closet and write down the items you wish you had while getting dressed.

Love it or Leave it

Only buy what you love. Be picky and look only for things that will make you feel great. This will ensure you love the item for what it is and not simply the sale price. Ask yourself if you would have been willing to pay full price for the same item? If the answer is yes, then you know it’s a keeper!

Handle with Care

Before deciding to make a purchase pay attention to the care requirements of a garment. If you never get around to dry cleaning or hand washing your clothes, don’t buy anything that requires special care.

The Way You Make Me Feel

Think about your favorite outfit and try to pinpoint what about it you like so much. Is it the fabric? Color? Does it fit just right or flatter your favorite feature? Does it make you feel professional? Sexy? Whatever it is, keep that in mind when you shop for new clothes.

Good Things Come to Those Who Wait

Avoid impulse buys. This is easy to do if you are sticking to your list and only buying what you love. Still not sure? Have the store hold the item for you. Go about your business and if you are still thinking about that jacket or skirt a few hours or days later, go ahead buy it.

If you’re wondering if a closet edit can really change the way you feel about your style check out what Renee had to say after her closet edit.

“Things are going great with my closet – I’ve already had a much easier time getting dressed since you re-organized because now I don’t feel overwhelmed by everything. Thanks to your suggestions, I’ve been able to wear a few of my tops that I had relegated to the “going out” section of my closet which is terrific! I’m also looking at everything with a new eye so I’m putting things together differently. It’s funny how those 4 hours made more of a difference than the countless hours of reading fashion mags and watching both versions of What Not to Wear ever did.”
– Renee Boltin – Charleston, SC

Read what Janelle has to say about how versatile her wardrobe became after her closet edit.

“My closet edit with the Style Concierge was invaluable.  The Style Concierge brought my wardrobe potential to life with ideas on how to put certain pieces together, make my favorites more versatile, and identified key pieces I needed to supplement my existing wardrobe.  I feel more professional and put-together at work, and more sophisticated when I go out.  When I’m shopping, I have new understanding of what I’m looking for and how to make items more versatile.”

We have entered that “blah” time of year when the excitement of the holidays has passed and the novelty of cold weather has been replaced by the realization that there are a few more months of winter left.  Rather than resign yourself to style boredom, mix up your wardrobe and bring a little life to your style.  If you are yearning for spring, try a pair of winter white pants.  They look great with camel flats and a bright colored sweater. There is something about this look that can make it seem warmer outside, even if there is still frost in the air.

Always wearing black?  Make gray your go to color instead, or pair bright colored tops or scarves with your black pants and skirts.  A bright accessory such as a red purse is another surefire way to brighten your outfit—and your day.

Tights can be a fun way to jazz up an outfit you’re feeling bored with. Wear them now while you can.  There are so many styles and designs that are both fun and office appropriate.  If  you work in a conservative office stick with tights in the same color as your skirt or dress and try small simple patterns.

Don’t forget that you can mix up your look with a great coat.  If you are going to be outside, your coat is what people will see and remember about your outfit.  So choose a flattering fit with great details in a bold color.

Make a statement, with your jewelry.  If you haven’t already jumped on the bold jewelry fashion train, its not too late.  It is a quick and easy way to take an everyday outfit up a notch.  Plus the sparkle and shine will help lift your spirits.  Try a multi-strand, mixed stone & metal necklace or two or three bold bangles.  Wear a solid colored top and keep the rest of your jewelry simple to keep the look appropriate for work.

Even when you are at the gym your style matters. My fitness guru friend and freelance writer, Valerie Howell, weighs in on how to look great while working out.

If one of your New Year’s Resolutions this year is to get fit, make sure you have the proper motivation to get your butt in gear.  And no, I’m not talking about Jillian Michaels from The Biggest Loser (although she would definitely inspire me to hit the gym!).  The right workout gear can give you a boost when you feel your resolve wavering.  Read on to find out how you can look cool while sweating it out this year.
Dress for Success: Feeling confident and comfortable in your clothes is important whether you are giving a high-stakes presentation at work or just pounding the pavement on your morning jog.   A comfortable, flattering sports bra and tops that hit just below the waist are key. Baggy tops will just make you look bigger than you are, while too tight tops will leave you feeling self-conscious.  Bootleg or cropped pants with a foldover waistband are universally flattering.  Dark pants are slimming and hide the sweat!

Sole Mate: Nothing will set back your fitness goals faster than an injury, so make sure you have the proper shoes for your activity. If you are a walker consider one of the many toning shoes on the market.  There are many stylish options available (check out Puma and New Balance), and don’t forget to wear them around the house or when you are out shopping to help sneak in some toning.  Wear cross-trainers for gym classes or weight lifting and reserve your high-quality running shoes for hitting the trails. TrySports in Mt. Pleasant (http://www.trysports.com/) and The Extra Mile in downtown Charleston (http://www.theextramileinc.com/) have very knowledgeable staff who can help you pick the right shoe for your foot type.  Bring in an old pair so they can check the wear patterns.  And remember to replace your running shoes every 300-500 miles!

New Balance Toning Shoes $114.99

Fitness Fashion Faves: Marshalls and T.J. Max carry all manner of brand name fitness apparel at great prices.   I’ve also found yoga mats, dumbells and fitness DVDs there as well.  Target is my go to store for trendy, affordable workout clothes. If you feel like splurging, try out Lululemon or Athleta clothing—but be sure to wait until you’ve reached your goal weight!

Resolve to love your style!
You don’t need a perfect body, tons of money, or an amazing fashion sense. All it takes is an adjustment of ATTITUDE!
This year make your style simple, easy, and effortless with these resolutions.
1.      Say yes to a dress.
Step up your style with a dress. They are the easiest way to put an outfit together—just put it on and you’re ready to go!
2.      Accept that perfection doesn’t exist.
There isn’t a woman in the world who believes she has the perfect body. Luckily we have clothes! Choose clothes with great fit and you’ll forget about your imperfections.
 3.      Dump the deadbeats.
You wear only 20% of the clothing you own. The other 80% is taking up valuable real estate in your closet. Edit your closet and keep only what you love to wear.
 4.      Embrace color.
Any wardrobe can be revived with a little bit of color. Not sure what colors look right on you? Remember that one color exists in many different shades. Hold a color up to your face in order to judge which shade is right for you.
 5.      Give a shout out to shoes.
The easiest way to change the look of an outfit is to simply change your shoes. Shoes are a great way to express the personality of your style.
 6.      Be willing to try ANYTHING on.
Remember that clothes are meant to be fun so why not have an open mind and try anything on. If you don’t like something, just take it off.
 7.      Shop smart.
When in doubt about what to buy calculate its cost per wear. Divide the cost of the item by the number of times it can potentially be worn to find out whether or not it will be a good investment for you.
 8.      Dress the body you have right NOW.
Does your style reflect who you are today—body, mind, and lifestyle? Your style tells the world who you are so be sure you know what your clothes are saying.
 9.      Think about proportion.
Dress your body in the most flattering way by paying attention to your body proportion. Aim to balance the proportion of your top and bottom half. For example, if you have broad shoulders choose an a-line skirt to balance out your bottom half.
10.  Try something new.
Style like life constantly evolves. Keep your style fun and fresh by trying something new. It can be as easy as trying a red shoe, a patterned top, or a bold necklace.

I feel like a whole new person. I’ve been unchained from the old self. I’ve been freed to laugh and dream and smile. And I’ve become more accessible to my clients, which is the whole point.

Donna Terrell, Criminal Defense Attorney

It is hard to explain why Lee is so brilliant at what she does because it is almost like magic. She pierces through your personality and reflects who you are in what you wear. She does not just pick out great clothes – she picks an outwardly appearance that creates a comfort zone while also allowing the world to see the real you.

Nate Casey, Entrepreneur

Working with Lee has dramatically increased my revenue, not because of what I’m wearing but because of how I show up when I am dressed like my future self.

Angela Lauria, The Difference Press

When I reflect on who I was before working with Lee, I see that everything about me was a muted version of who I am today. And thanks to Lee’s incredible gift, I’m me. I now show up every single day: as the thought-leader Lee helped me dress to become (and be).

Hillary Walsh, Esq., New Frontier Immigration Law

Thank YOU! It was such a fantastic mini-class you took us through. You got everyone really into it! I can hardly believe that I actually had to cut them all off. You are a force! We are very lucky to have had the benefit of your help and we’re all better for it.

Megan Graves, Client Happiness & Team Happiness Coordinator, Upleveling Your Business

You are amazing!!!!!! I’ve been thinking about our conversation all day and this is just brilliant – you are a strategist and creative genius. Your vision completely resonates with me. I am so grateful for you, Lee.

Kelly McGrath, Esq., Kelly McGrath Law

Lee had a surprising way about her that uncovered my deeper self, my reason for being, and encoded it onto my wardrobe like a symbol—a moment-by-moment reminder of who I am, and what I’m here to do. Her brilliance crept up on me; I didn’t realize it was her behind the changes in my life until months afterwards. Now, I am able to approach everything I do from a place of power.

Jonathan Sparks, Esq. Sparks Law

Lee brings to life a vision bigger than I imagined. I’ve had the pleasure of working with her on my personal brand, photo shoot strategy, and the brand experience of events for my non-profit. Through each piece she’s helped me grow as a leader and an organization. I love having her on my team.
